Reflection, inspiration, and conscious choices

December 11, 2024

As the year comes to a close, we take a moment to reflect on 2024—a year filled with milestones, learning, and connection—and to look ahead to the possibilities of 2025.The holidays are not only a time to celebrate but also to share our thoughts, and invite you to join us in embracing meaningful, sustainable, and circular designer fashion.

Reflections on this year

Being a pioneer in circular, locally made, and socially responsible fashion isn’t easy. In 2024, our 5th anniversary year, we did encounter the complexities of balancing creativity, sustainability, social vallues and commercial viability in a linear world focused on speed and cost-efficiency.

At Hul le Kes, we set high standards for ourselves: producing in the Netherlands, addressing mental health, committing to true circularity (not just using old fabrics but creating a genuinely sustainable system), and maintaining artistic integrity. It’s a path of learning, falling, and rising again. Like actual living! A path we want to follow to prove that fashion can be beautiful, sustainable, and socially impactful all at once.

2024

This year brought incredible moments that reinforced our commitment to crafting a different kind of fashion:

Winning Cultuurprijs Arnhem: The year started with our creative director Sjaak Hullekes winning the Cultuurprijs Arnhem, a reward for his impact on the creative industries of Arnhem, our hometown.

Open Studio Days: Two inspiring events in Arnhem opened the doors to our production process, fostering transparency and lowering the threshold for participants in the Recovery Studio and Manufacturing Studio.

5-Year Anniversary Show: A memorable fashion show in Amsterdam celebrated our journey and shared our vision for the future of fashion, read this blog to watch it all back.

International Presence: Participating in Poet in Denmark, Pitti in Florence, and in showrooms in Paris connected us with a global audience. (Our wholesale page will show you where we are heading next)

Dutch Design Week: Presenting our collection at Piet Hein Eek’s store highlighted our dedication to circular design.

Gems of Arnhem: It has been a great event, a few weeks ago, at the Hul le Kes Store in Arnhem, where we organized a Holiday market together with brands like Humanoid, Re-Garde, Vivian Sauvage, Petra Lunenburg, Som tales of perfume and Eva Follender Grossfeld

Local Engagement: From the Stockdagen and June Fashion Month Arnhem to our inclusion in the Cosh! sustainable fashion route, we brought sustainability closer to home.

Educational Workshops: We inspired the next generation of designers through workshops with Rijn IJssel students and others. We are now even an official CKV (cultural and creative education) location for secondary schools!

These moments of connection and learning have been a source of inspiration, even as we navigate the challenges of pioneering a new approach to fashion.
