June Bloom at Hul le Kes: Fashion, Culture, and Connection

June 10, 2024

June is here, and in Arnhem, it’s known as Juni Modemaand, meaning plenty of activities at the Hul le Kes Store. The social and circular fashion label Hul le Kes is playing a prominent role in this month’s program. Visit their inspiring exhibition ‘A Matter of Taste,’ get a unique behind-the-scenes look during the Open Studio, and snag an archive piece during the Stockdays. Until July 7th, there’s a lot to experience and discover at the Hul le Kes Store in Arnhem. Don’t miss this chance to see the versatility and creativity of Hul le Kes up close!

A Matter of Taste: Reflecting Society

As part of the ‘Ties that Bind’ theme of the State of Fashion Biennale in Arnhem, Hul le Kes launched the project ‘A Matter of Taste.’ This initiative brought together (former) asylum seekers in Arnhem, working in the Hul le Kes Studios, with other employees of the company. By sharing stories about the flavors, smells, and dishes that remind them of home,

their journey to the Netherlands was made more relatable. The dishes were cooked and tasted during a communal dinner, with ingredients also serving as dyes for textiles and Hul le Kes Monet Shirts. These colorful and diverse creations, reflecting today’s society, are on display at the Hul le Kes Store in Arnhem, from Wednesday to Saturday.

Open Studios at Hul le Kes

On June 21st, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Hul le Kes opens the doors of both studios to the public. Visitors can explore the Recovery Studio and the Manufacturing Studio and ask questions to the staff. Get a unique behind-the-scenes look at the social and sustainable fashion label Hul le Kes and discover where their clothing comes to life.

The Open Studio is perfect for anyone passionate about fashion or clothing making. It’s also a great opportunity for those looking for an internship or work-study position to learn more about Hul le Kes.

The Open Studio is part of a broader program with more Open Studios in the Rijndistrict. Various creative studios, ranging from product designers and graphic designers to fashion schools, open their doors to the public.

Archive Pieces During Stockdays Arnhem

As a champion of a fairer and more sustainable fashion system, Hul le Kes is a strong opponent of sales. You will rarely find a Hul le Kes item on discount; you pay for what it’s worth. However, during the Stockdays, samples and items with small production errors are offered at a friendlier price. Want to get your hands on one of these unique pieces? Come to Arnhem from July 4th to 7th.

During these days, not only Hul le Kes but also other renowned designers like Spijkers en Spijkers, Elsien Gringhuis, and TrixenRees open their doors to the public. This is a great opportunity to discover and purchase unique and sustainable fashion items. Don’t miss this chance to buy quality clothing at reduced prices while learning more about the value and sustainability of fashion.

State of Fashion

On May 17th, the State of Fashion Biennale ‘Ties that Bind’ opened in Arnhem, kicking off Juni Modemaand. For this edition, Hul le Kes designed special upcycled bags for State of Fashion, available to order at the Rembrandt Theater. Additionally, the Hul le Kes Manufacturing Studio provided the sewing work for some curtains in the main exhibition, designed by Maison the Faux.

As part of the State of Fashion city exhibition, curated by FDFA, work by Lisa Konno is on display in the Hul le Kes Store window. This route takes you through the city center of Arnhem, along various Juni Modemaand favorites. It’s worth stopping by these shops to discover what they have to offer.
