“I want to paint people as if I were painting apples or flowers.”
– Charley Toorop
Charley Toorop (1891–1955), a pioneering Dutch painter and lithographer, is renowned for her raw and powerful portraits. A fiercely independent figure, she defied artistic conventions and societal expectations throughout her life. Toorop’s intense observation of the human condition resonates with Hul le Kes’ philosophy: both embrace the honesty of imperfection and the beauty of resilience. Her bold, unpolished approach to form and colour continues to inspire our work, not least in garments like these, which carry the layered histories of both their materials and their makers.
