"Impressionism is the newspaper of the soul"
Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) was a French artist primarily known as a painter but also a very skilled draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. He was part of the Fauvism movement in which he and André Derain where known as its leaders. At the beginning of the 1890’s he moved to Paris where he studied. His teachers where not overwhelmed by his art and told him he was a bad draughtsman. His use of color was influenced by the works of Vincent van Gogh. He died at the age of 84 in Nice, France.
